After several months with no possibility of getting back on a track, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin was more than determined to perform today at Sunset Speedway (Innisfil, Ontario). The #47 WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare Team showed all its potential by winning the first race of the day on the last lap of a hard-fought race. After a tough battle amongst the leaders in the second race, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin was forced to retire when his engine failed on lap 35.
Practice (Summary)
A late-morning practice session ended with Louis-Philippe Dumoulin third quickest, just 0.14 seconds behind the fastest driver. "Our practice sessions at Autodrome Chaudière paid off. We made some changes earlier today, but nothing major. Sunset Speedway has a few bumps that affect the handling and our changes will be effective. We want to win it all but I know that the tires will deteriorate seriously towards the end of the race and that every driver will have to manage this drop in performance and the changes in track conditions. I know that I will have to adjust my pace and improvise with my driving approach as the race goes on in order to keep a quick car for the last laps when the race is won or lost," said Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.
First Race (Summary) - Victory
Tenth on the starting grid following a draw sequenced according to owners' 2019 points, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin skillfully sneaked into the top-5 on lap 15. Around lap 30, he moved to fourth and mounted a judicious 30-lap attack to take third and then second on lap 72. By lap 100, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin had fought relentlessly to make it to first place. On the last restart with two laps left after a long side-by-side battle, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin started from third for the green-white-Checkered NASCAR Overtime finish. The leaders then hit each other in turn 3 on the last lap, creating an opening which he took advantage of to jump to first place at the exit of turn 4 and win in the eventful contest.
"We won with a lot of determined driving, it's going to be a great show on TV! My #47 WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare car was really responding to the quality analysis and preparation work of our team, giving me a really quick car," said Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.
The #47 WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare team has a lot of work to do in preparation for the second race, in order to repair the bumps in the bodywork all over the car and to validate the suspension settings based on our experience of the first race.
Second Race (Summary) - Mechanical Failure on Lap 35
Second on the starting grid after a draw sequenced as per the results of the first race, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin wanted nothing less than a second victory. The competition was strong right from the start and he put on a display of hard-nosed racing to keep his position in the lead group. Unfortunately, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin was forced to retire from the race on lap 35 with a broken engine.
"Our goal was to preserve the car for a strong finish, and we were doing just that until the engine failed. This was unusual as our engine program has been very good for years. The team will analyze the failure, a hole in cylinder 4 for which we have no explanation at this time. We will come back stronger at Flamboro Speedway in two weeks," concludes Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.
QuickWick 125 and Canadian Tire 125 (Summary)
- Louis-Philippe Dumoulin won the first race and Jason Hathaway took the second race.
- Five (5) caution periods occurred in the first race, and only one (1) in the second race.
